Copiapoa 'esmeraldana'

Date: 2001 February 15
Location: coastal Chile, near Esmeralda

I write 'esmeraldana' with a degree of uncertainty as to what this plant is. There is no doubt that it grows in the Guanillos valley near Esmeralda, in company with some other Copiapoa species, but it is far from clear that it is Ritter's Copiapoa esmeraldana, although specimens have been cultivated under the name for some time.

Another specimen with a flower 'past its best'.

These two photos show the difficulty of identification in habitat, or is it that the plants don't want to conform to the neat species that we seem to desire to slot them into? I guess these two are the 'same', but one seems to take spination more seriously than the other.
