Matucana madisoniorum

An attractive plant, sometimes found listed as Submatucana. It bears the typical zygomorphic flowers of the genus, but I think that I find the unusual rough epidermis its most endearing feature. Sometimes it is almost entirely spineless, indeed you can see a few spineless areoles in the picture, but it is very variable in this respect, and spineless plants can grow spiny offsets, or get just an occasional spine.
